Exit Slip 11.3 5/5/10

the surface area is going to be used to determine how much of the product is going to fit inside. To know how much stuff fits inside so how big or wide the can has to be to be able to fit in the same amoint of contint as before

Teamm Magic Community Box Maker Project.

The Community Box Maker Project was basically us trying out different designs that worked best for the boxes belonging to one company, and using that same design and use it for a different company. For example my group Magic Johnson, consisting of Ariel, Alyssa, Samantha, and myself chose to use the companies FedEx Express and Ups. At first I thought the project wasn’t going to be completed or was going to be hard because my group didn’t have the best attendance but after realizing it’s pretty much the same thing we did for the USPS Box Project I was at ease because my group didn’t find that project as challenging.
At first I was completely lost and didn’t know what I was doing, after looking at my teammate Ariel’s paper I had some understanding of what we were doing. I chose to use the function (x+20) for FedEx Express because it seemed pretty simple compared to the other functions the other teams where using. For my table I decided to go by 5”s for my x value, after I generalized the volume I plugged the equation for volume x(x+20) (130-(4x+40)) in the calculator and went to the table on the calculator to see if the numbers in my chart matched the numbers on the table on the calculator, the numbers did match which meant my generalization for volume was correct. Afterwards, I had to fix my windows because the full turns weren’t shown on the graph. It took me like 30 tries to actually get the graph to show the turns. Using the information from the windows I set up my own graph my x min was -45, x max 65, x scale was 5, Y min -4500, Y max 20,000, and Y scale 500. I had to graph it like 3 times because at first I wasn’t sure how was I suppose to also put my team mates designs on the same graph till Wan told Samantha and myself that we had to use the same windows. After that the rest of my teammates design for FedEx express where put on the graph. ((x+5), (x+15), and (x+10). After I was done graphing I made sure that the graph on the calculator and my graph looked somewhat similar. Since we finished everything for FedEx I moved on to Ups. It was all basically the same thing but two things, the generalization for volume changed to x(x+20)(165-(4x+40)) and my windows changed to x min -45, x max 65, x scale 5, Y min -4500, Y max 20000, and Y scale 500 after that I graphed all my group members designs for Ups.
We concluded that (x+5) was the best design for both companies and (x+10) was the worst design. (x+5) was more wider and (x +10) was much more little and had less space. This was not what I expected I expected (x+20) to be the best design, because I thought if the numbers where bigger the more space a design would have.
Basically everything we’ve done throughout this project is things I’ve learned. This project has made me become a leader in a sense because usually I always go along with what people are doing even if I don’t know but this helped me actually learn something, take control of my education, and throughout the process even help people outside of my group. I did accomplish what I set out to do which was actually finish the project because once we were told who was in our group I didn’t think I was going to complete the project. I overcame a lot of my group members absences and I also over the came the temptations to cut or come late to class.
The only person that really helped me was wan so thanks wan. !

Progress Update 2

I generalized by using the function I used for volume. I set up my axes by going through my table on the calculator there I realized i was dealing with negative numbers there for I needed 4 quadrants. We all put our tables together if they were for the same company. Once we graphed it we realized that (x+10) was the worst design for both Fed Ex Express and Ups, (x+20) was the best design for both companies.
